Our story
A workshop that keeps good furniture in homes.
Founded in 2009 above a hardware shop in Sin Ming, Rattan & Thread is a three-bench upholstery atelier serving Singapore homes, designers and hotels.

The craft
We learned on frames older than us
Our founder, Adrian Seah, trained under a Peranakan furniture maker in Geylang, re-tying springs by hand before he was allowed near a staple gun. That order of work still holds: frame first, foundation second, foam third, fabric last.
Most of what arrives at the workshop is better made than what would replace it — teak frames, mortise-and-tenon joints, hardwood rails. Restoring them keeps good furniture out of Singapore's landfill and keeps the memories attached to it.
We work with interior designers, boutique hotels along Keong Saik, and a great many families with one sofa they simply won't part with.
